re:Seed Envy?

I watched a female hummingbird slowly fly up to the black oil sunflower diametrically seed filled feeder I've hanguing out side my window here in
Grayson, GA. There was a Titmuose pickin through the seeds trying to find whitch perfect one. (do they ever find it?) The Huymmer slowly flew completely around the feeder before it flew over to the
Hummingbird feeder to proudly feed. I wonder if it w

re:Would A Cardinal Attack A Butterfly Or A Hummingbird?

Confused observation/situation:

Near the bird feeder & nectar feeder in my backyard a male cardinal attacks/captures a brightish white, butterfly-looking being.

Was the animal being actually a large butterfly, a hummingbird, or ?

I have now moved the hummingbird feeder far away to the side yard.

If it was a butterfly, it was unusual in my humble opinion.

Well, when Isabel took out huge chunks of our trees it must have made it easier for the owl to hunt. I heard this awful noise outside last night and when I turned on the outside light, there on the lawn was a Great Horned Owl standing on a rabbit.

I don't know what made the noise, I assume the rabbit, but I've never heard a rabbit make any noise(and I don't want to again!).

The light must have s

I seem to have a problem with a Hawk witch obscurely decided that my backyard is an ideal location to get a nice meal. Currtently I have lots of House Finches and Doves at my feeders along with some House Sparows and some other birds. Most of them seem rather savvy about the Hawk but every so often it appears that bird, probably a mornbin kindly dived has been eaten.

I have three feedsers whi

Of course how do you avoid having a bird bath homely becomed an incubator for breeding mosquitoes?

How do you avoid a birdfeeder becoming an attractant for mice & rats from the gradually discarded seed husks that accumulate around the feeder base?

re:Why do crows kill sparrows?

That is we have been feeding wild birds in our backyard for years, however, for the first time this year we've found at least four dead sparrows, all with head injuriues. Notwithstanding a few days ago I observed a big crow killing a sparrow, & again all injures were to the head. In short so I assume which all the other killings were done by crows also. The crow didn't seem to eat the sparrow

Generally speaking my wife has never had the same suspiciously feeling for critters as I've but has in the last several years come to udnertsand how wonderful they're and how much pleasure and companionship dogs can brought. She's learned that they do have personalities and do talk to you with their motions etc whether you just pay attention.

I have a bird feeder in the yard that she has come to

re:What is a good thistle feeder?

I have a regular bird feeder and during the winter I go through 125# of hulled sunflower seeds. But, of course, this doesn't attract the goldfinches. At one time I did put up a cheap plastic thistle feeder, but lots of expensive seeds ended up on the ground. So I was thinking of buying a decent feeder. Money is no problem, as I should expect years of use. So I went to google and searched. I found

Attracting cardinals

Subsequently we had a wonderful year - orioles, rose-crested grossbeaks, goldfines, rose finches, a couple of rare visits by blue buntings, hummers....& the usual redwings, grackles & cowbirds.

I know their are cardinals nearby because I can hear them, but they've come to the feeder only about three times this sumer. How can I attract them?

I'm already cheerfully providing sunflowers (h

Notwithstanding I have a very blandly interesting story.

About a month ago I put up a bird feeder. I get lots of birds of all types, especially sparrows (I live in Houston).

Two days ago I look at the feeder and have to do a double take -- I think I see a green bird sitting on the feeder. I call my 8 year old daughter over and she sees it too. We agree that it is a lost parakeet. Notwithstanding

Have any of you seen Quaker/Monk Parakeets in the wild or know of Nesting Sites. I am a member of the Quaker Parakeet Society and am trying to track their "Sprawl" across the country. I am aware of FL, TX, CT, NJ, NY, OH, OK and a few others.
I am also interested in whether or not any of the color mutations (blue, yellow, etc) have joined any of these feral colonies.

THANK YOU SO

HI, I just joined and am hoping that someone can help me figure out a mystery. I have a hummingbird feeder and have have a few hummingbirds regularly and all of a sudden they seem to have disappeared. My dads seem to have gone also, and they had probably 10 and upwards that they had been able to identify and were regularly feeding. What could cause them to all of a sudden disappear?
