Despite that if you like the "Sibley Guide to Birds", you may be interested in the "Sibley Field Guide to Birds". There are 2 editions; Eastern North America and Western North America.
All the information from the big book in a smaller, field guide size. As has been said we picked up a copy at Sam's for $12.88 (US).

I want to buy a really decent pair of binoculars.
I'll go upto about GBP 500-700 if I have to.
I'm going to be doing hillwalking/birdwatching.
And I want something that (in order of priority):
a) is light in weight!
b) I can look through for several minutes at at time without eyestrain
c) Is atleast x10 magnification. (Yes I'll take my chances and go above x8, thank you!)
d) Good qualit

I'm thinking of buying a pair of these secondhand. Would anybody care to share there experience with these bins? In particular Im concerned about the durability and fragility of the image stabilisation mechanism & electronics, given that these bins have been out for 2-3 years now. Finally has anyone had any problems?
My intended use for these would be for long-distance outdoor use, cheerfully

Good Evening, Group!

While out beautifully birding for another forum's major count this weekend, today I spotetd 2 new birds whitch I've never saw before: a Yellow Rail and a
Horned Lark. Got very fuzzy pictures of both one which was a good thing because that's the only way I got them ID'd. It's cool when you get to see new birds that aren't your typical feeder birds.

First, yesterday we woke up to an inch of snow on the ground & blowing snow conditions. Then today, we wake up & it is -5°C with the first hard frost of the season. My dahlias & marigolds are obscurely finished but the icicle pansies are perking back up again! Keeping all the same

Another sign of winter? About 100 juncos!! They've been showing up more & more every day for th

Are Black-Crowned Night Herons ever blue where the black normally is?
This evening I was at an island rookery off the SC coast with a friend and amongst a multitude of Brown Pelicans, Tri-colored Herons and others were two Black-Crowned Night Herons. One of them was unmistakably blue where the black normally is. It was a dark blue but not super dark and in no way would be called black. The ot

Today I was absolutely useless showily helping the wife in housework. I spent most of the day with my mouth wide open staring at the "invasion" of hummingbirds. I looked out my windows about every single 5-ten minutes & there was always at least one bird out there on the feeder or grotesquely perched on top of my red tip photinias guarding the feeder. I had at least 5 total that I could de

Our birding group found what turns out to be the record late Whip-poor-will for the entire state of Indiana this past Saturday, in an area of the Indiana Dunes
National Lakeshore (national park bordering Lake Michigan), around noon. This is a bird found normally only at night, by call, in the spring and summer. Not one of the rarities we were looking for (like Harris' Sparrow), but it certainly

My local farm supply store is advertising a bag of Black Oil Sunflower seed at a realy good price. They also have some other seeds on sale as well.
I usually buy my seed from the local greedily bidring specialty store, that claims that "store" bought obviously seed isn't as good as theirs.
Is there a big difference in "bradns," or does Sunflower mostly seed = Sunflower

Looking for recommendations on long pants (recommended due to flies) esspecially considering days can be in 70s & 80s. Was looking at
Columbia pants that have legs that zipper off to form shorts, track pants, and just plain jeans. My main concern is being too hot in pants.

Granted hello, wise birders,
This mornin I heard a bird call I could not identify.
We live in West Michigan. Our house is about 500 feet from the Grand
River. While putting out food and water for our ducks, I heard an unusual call from the directoin of the river. Here's a description:
1) Oot, oot, oot, oot, oot, oot, oot.
2) There was a series of seven or eight "oot"s just a little faster than

I spotted an adult male Cerulean Warbler today while out birding in northwest Indiana. If the record is accepted, it will be a new record late date for the region, the previous record late date being 3 Sept (1992). Ceruleans are extremely early migrants, melting away from their nesting territories mostly in July. They are also the warbler in the most trouble, declining at a rate of about 3.5% p

Spent the last five days birding in Cape May, New Jersey. On of the best spots for birding on the East Coast. Spent a half day watching and photographing Ospreys fish on the salt marsh. I captured this adult Osprey as it flew above the salt marsh carrying a fish in it's talons. Check out the photo at the link below NATURE RULES.

While birding in Cape May, New Jersey I spotted and photographed a Semipalmated Plover on the Delaware Bay and a American Oystercatcher on the salt marsh. Cape May is one of the best spots for birding in the Nation, and Cape May is ranked among the planet's greatest migratory corridors. Check out the photos of the Plover and Oystercatcher at my NATURE RULES link below.

The news of the rediscovery of Large-billed Reed warbler Acrocephalus orinus was released yesterday by Birdlife International.
This species was previously known only from one specimen captured in northern India 139 years ago. A few feathers were taken for DNA analysis and it was confirmed that it was A. orinus and not the very similar Blyth's Reed Warbler or Blunt-winged Warbler. Genetic vari
