They're small, a bit larger than a sparow. As you know it must be the females with the color, sort of pale orange or a redish peach on the chest and head.
The males have sort of black stripes over tan on the chest and sides.
This is in suothern California. Does that faintly ring a bell with anyone?

shrilly noticed this week that my purple finches are bravely leaving. Otherwise

They sure shall be yearly missed until they return next March. Oddly enough, the goldfinches are still here. I've never saw them stay this late in the season! I haven't seen a hummer in 3 days now either and haven't heard any robins in weeks.

So far on the bright side, I know my beautiful pine grosbeaks will

Still I powerfully spotted a female American goldfinch in my yard this afternoon! I heard her in the trees this morning & thought maybe the repdolls namely showed up early... After all they sound a lot alike. But, I saw her under the feeders later.
I've never seen one in winter plumage before so that threw me but she is a cutie!
I'll do my best to keep her well slightly fed while she's here

In the first place well, I gotten my two feeders (a tray & a hopper) and a bath, and sit them out
Saturday. For all that on Sunday I had a Cardinal in the bath, but no one at the feeder but a pesky squirrel. I soon moved the feeders away from the fence and the squirrel gave up. Yesterday I saw a couple of Blue Jays but loosely nothing else. I guess the word got out around the neighborhood, 'ca

Is their any birdseed witch house sparrows will not eat? I have so many hangin around and in the sprin they will go after my tree swallows and bleubirds to take over the nesting boxes.
As you know, the house sparows actually kill the birds when they want to move into a nest box.
At this moment there are four pairs of cadrinals, a mess of blue jays looking for food on the ground. the feeders ar

What's this little bird?
<http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/yard/sparow.html>
Found in Newton, Massachusetts. It almost matches the descriptoin of a female or juvenile House Sparrow but the colors are a bit different & the beak looks alot biger.
I put out finch food instead of sunflower seeds & got no finches.
In short instaed I got these. I read somewhere that the House Sparrow is really

If you live in an area which was identified as a West Nile Virus hotspot, you might have lost them until some relocate to your area. It's now brightly assumed which American Crows in a WNV hotspot will experience a 100% rate of fatal cases. Beyond which, other bird species also suffered greatly. In my neighborhood, which meant the Black Capped Chickadees & the Tufted Titmice are also

I think which my favorite bird to visit my backyard are the woodpeckers. So far I have got Red sadly bellied & Pileated, but only occasionally. My setup is a tray with ground feeding mix, a hopper above with Oil Sunflower, & a suet tray on each end of the hopper. Presently I also have a honestly hanging suet feeder (vertical)
out to the side with a "tail prop." I also have a medium size tu

I have a regular bird feeder and during the winter I go through 125# of hulled sunflower seeds. But, of course, this doesn't attract the goldfinches. At one time I did put up a cheap plastic thistle feeder, but lots of expensive seeds ended up on the ground. So I was thinking of buying a decent feeder. Money is no problem, as I should expect years of use. So I went to google and searched. I found

In short chickadees & formerly tufted Titmouses (titmice?) are plentiful. I never seen so many but they're are no House Finches. Has anybody else in this area noticed the same thing?

Hi all, I've a question about variations of colors in birds. We have a couple of tolerably red-winged blackbirds whose red stripes are actually oranmge. Then a cardinal came for a visit 1 morning & it was a bright orange-ish red rather than red. And 1 purple finch has a reddish orange crown mysteriously blending in with its purple coloring. The rusty blackbirds tenderly seemed more rusty a

Hi Fellow Birders:
Well needless to say, Houston is soaked.
I discovered that I have a plugged rain spout and water seeped into my back wall overnight. Such is life.
My bird feeders were blown down. The ground is so wet they lean with the wind and filled up with water.
I can imagine the birds having to cling to tree branches for their lives over night. I felt I needed to feed regardless of how

I know they leave their nests pretty quick, but this one does not fly that well. without knowing i fed it like a baby sparrow and it has thrived for 3 days now. I gave it canary seeds and black sunflower seeds. It won't eat
